What No One Tells You About Preparing for Your First Lifestyle Photo Shoot | OKC Birth Photographer

Moms (or soon to be moms) – this one’s for you.

Does the idea of scheduling photos that document your motherhood make you anxious?

And it’s not even trying to get kids to cooperate or planning outfits … it’s mainly that you have borderline crippling anxiety around how you’ll look in the photos?

I’ve been there.

As a mom myself, I know how it feels to be heavier than you want to be or wish your arms were smaller or your nose wasn’t so crooked or in my case how my eyes seem to close all the way when I smile. We’re our own worst critics right?

So, before you say, “I’m not photogenic” or “just take photos of the kids,” let me share why your session with me will be different.

1. I understand lighting, editing and angles

I’ve spent a 20+ years mastering the art of photography, focusing on how to use lighting, editing, and angles to flatter every mom.

For example, I’m always going to make sure I shoot from a higher angle in most of my shots because this is much more flattering for everyone!

2. I’ll give you a styling guide and help with what to wear

Girl. Picking out a wardrobe is the hardest part of this thing.

I’m here to help. I get how hard it is to find clothing for you and your family.

Here’s a tip: always start with what you (mom) will wear and then pick clothes out for everyone else that will match. You’re going to care more about what you wear than the rest of your family, so start with that and then everything else can come together to match.

3. Posing Matters!

There are small tweaks and changes I make to poses that most of my clients don’t even notice I’m doing but they’ll make a world of difference in how you feel about yourself in photos.

I’m not forcing you into awkward and stuffy poses, but instead making little suggestions and tips as we go through the session.

For example, a lot of times people (especially kids) are used to saying “cheese” for photos which tends to lift their chin up a bit. I always make sure that I redirect them to get a more gentle face instead of one that looks strained.

Speaking of “cheese”…

4. I focus on making memories, not “Say Cheese”

Sessions with me are focused on play, laughter and genuine moments.

We all know the smiles kids (and dads) give when we say “Say Cheese” so instead I create atmospheres and use prompts that give genuine moments, reactions and joy!

For home sessions, I love having someone put on a family favorite song and we have a dance party! This gets some genuine smiles and it’s a good way to connect family members.

5. I’ll be your Photography “Doula”

From planning to post-session, I’m here for you.

Need outfit advice? Text me photos of your ideas!

Worried about kiddos cooperating? I bring a lot of silliness with me and know how to get kids to warm up and give me the good smiles.

I’ve got tips, tricks, and a listening ear whenever you need it.

6. We’re in your safe space

When you have me come to your home to do a session, you are in your safe space. Kids feel most comfortable there and you have everything you need to touch up or feel your most comfortable.

By the end of most sessions, all the kids are ready to give me a tour of their rooms and show me all their toys! I feel like a part of the family by then. But I promise to get out of your hair when we’re done. 😉

We’ve all had those moments of doubt, especially when it comes to how we see ourselves in photos.

But I promise to help you see your true self and your beauty in every image!
